Who is the current Assessor?
Appointed by Kevin Dunion in May 2010, the current Rector's Assessor is Amanda Litherland. Amanda is studying for an MA (Hons) in Mediaeval History and is from the Isle of Man. Outside her studies, she has appeared in a number of student theatrical productions including The Tempest. You can contact Amanda here.
What does the Assessor do?
- The Assessor is a student who is the primary source of assistance and advice to the Rector. They are responsible for ensuring that students, societies, clubs, etc who request meetings with or support from the Rector receive a prompt response. They set up meetings, surgeries and events as appropriate.
- The Assessor maintains a close relationship with the Students’ Association so that the Rector is kept up to date with current issues, and carries out information gathering for the Rector on such issues.
- The Assessor is also responsible for raising awareness of the role of the Rector and current activities through e-mails, this website and others, and local and student media.
- The Assessor is ex officio a member of the University Court, which is chaired by the Rector, and takes an active role in the Court and its committees.
- The Assessor also maintains a relationship with other Assessors and Rectors in Scotland (at Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Dundee Universities) and helps prepare for meetings of the Rectors’ Group.
- The next Assessor will be responsible for encouraging students to nominate the next Rector in October 2011, ensuring a broad range of strong and committed candidates, as well as ensuring that arrangements for the electoral process are satisfactory.
What does it take to be an Assessor?Appointed directly by the Rector, the Rector's Assessor requires a certain set of skills. They should:- be efficient, and able to juggle the demands of this position with academic and other commitments.
- be confident dealing with senior figures in University governance, whether by contributing to discussion at Court or in one-to-one meetings with the Principal.
- be in tune with current issues of concern to students over a wide range of interests and be able to advise the Rector accordingly.
- share the Rector’s priorities in order to represent the Rector in meetings and work to advance his agenda.
- be IT and web literate, as the role involves maintaining the Rector's web presence on this site and others.
Previous Assessors
From 2008-2009, Kevin's Assessor was Georgina Rannard, who graduated in 2009 with an MA (Hons) in Modern History. Georgina is from Liverpool and is currently the Director of Representation at the Students' Association.
From 2009-2010, James Shield was Rector's Assessor. James is an International Relations student from Lundin Links, Fife, and was also a former Director of Representation at the Students' Association.
